Strovolos is a municipality of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, and the second biggest municipality in Cyprus with approximately 70,000 inhabitants. In 2009, the city committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020 in the framework of the Covenant of Mayor’s initiative.
To achieve this objective, the municipality has developed a comprehensive Sustainable Energy Action Plan and planned the implementation of ambitious measures on its territory to reduce energy consumption and increase renewable energy generation. In that framework, the Municipality of Strovolos has installed photovoltaic systems of 3KW at the Municipality’s Warehouses as well as sixty-four autonomous public lights with PV in parks and public spaces. Additionally, a green roof has been constructed at Acropolis Park which is the biggest park in Strovolos. Three Low Income Households in Strovolos have also been renovated in the framework of the ELIH-MED project to increase their energy efficiency. Furthermore, the Strovolos Municipality has joined the national recycling programme ran by Green Dot (Cyprus) Ltd for Municipal solid waste (PMD, PAPER, GLASS). In the field of sustainable mobility, the Municipality has also implemented a free parking system for eco- cars (hybrid and electric).
Within the Replication Campaign of the EU-GUGLE and SINFONIA projects, the municipality of Strovolos will have the opportunity to discover, and get inspired by, the innovative solutions implemented in the projects’ pilot cities for renewable energy generation and energy efficiency improvements.
