Nuoro, IT

The city of Nuoro is located in Sardinia, Italy, and has a population of approximately 36,000 inhabitants. The city has significant potential for the production of renewable energy from sources such as solar, wind and biomass energy. Furthermore, as the municipality is located on an island, it is not connected to the natural gas network and has thus an increased interest to develop the production of renewable energy sources.

In the framework of the Covenant of Mayors, the city has committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 22% by 2020. In order to achieve this objective, the city of Nuoro aims to develop regulatory incentives to promote the installation of photovoltaic systems in private buildings, as well as in industry. In addition, the city plans to install more energy-efficient heating systems such as heat pumps in several buildings and improved the thermal insulation of public buildings, including several schools as well as a convent. With the aim of decreasing CO2 emissions from transport, Nuoro intends to renew its public transport fleet, leading to a 21% emission reduction.

As a member of the Replication Cluster, the city of Nuoro will build on the accumulated experience of the EU-GUGLE and SINFONIA pilot cities to further develop smart solutions for the integration of renewable energy sources in residential and industrial buildings.
