The city of Kozani is located in the northern part of Greece and has a population of approximately 70,000 inhabitants. In 2011, the city joined the Covenant of Mayors to reflect its commitment to the promotion of sustainable urban development. In the framework of its Sustainable Energy Action Plan, the city has set itself the objective of reducing its CO2emissions by 21% by 2020 in comparison to the year 2010.
As part of its activities to cut greenhouse gases emissions, the municipality of Kozani is planning to implement ambitious measures to reduce the energy consumption of municipal buildings. These measures will include the improvement of thermal insulation as well as the installation of green roofs and solar panels. Additionally, the city intends to set up geothermal heat pumps for heating and air conditioning. Moreover, the municipality of Kozani is currently working on the installation of an energy-efficient system for public lighting as well as on the promotion of low-carbon transport systems with the implementation of innovative solutions regarding electro-mobility. Finally, as part of its future development plans, the Municipality is considering the possibility of installing biomass boilers to cover part of its thermal needs.
As a member of the EU-GUGLE and SINFONIA Replication Cluster, the municipality of Kozani is expecting to share best practices on energy-efficient building refurbishment and renewable energy generation with other European cities developing innovative solutions in these fields.
