Trikala, EL

The city of Trikala is located in the North-Western part of Greece and has a population of approximately 81,000 inhabitants. To show its commitment towards greater sustainability in European cities, the municipality of Trikala joined the Covenant of Mayors’ initiative in 2008.

In the framework of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan designed by the municipality, the city has committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% by 2020. As part of this commitment, Trikala is planning to implement innovative measures to improve the energy efficiency of the city’s building and infrastructures. To achieve this objective, the municipality is participating in the InSmart project and will develop a complete methodology to achieve an integrated energy planning for the city. This methodology will take into account energy efficiency as well as renewable energy generation, waste management and urban mobility. In view of promoting more sustainable modes of transport within the city, Trikala has already extended the network of bicycle lanes and led a pilot test for autonomous buses. In the near future City of Trikala is planning to set a permanent network of autonomous electric vehicles in order to use it as a public transportation system through the city centre.

As a member of the Replication Cluster, the city of Trikala will be able to exchange expertise and ideas on smart urban planning with other European cities.
